like all neal shusterman novels, this one focuses on an aspect of human nature and the human condition that gets you to take a closer look at your inner self. i interpreted bruiser to be about what it means to be empathetic towards others and that sometimes sacrifices must be made. the flip side of the message about the necessity of sacrifices, is that boundaries are also necessary and you must allow people to fight their own battles.
overall, very well written novel with an interesting storyline and characters. not my favorite from neal shusterman, but still very good.

Would I read it again? No

This was another revisit to a book I got at a book fair and loved the first time I read it in high school. It certainly does not hold up for me now. Again, I just don’t really enjoy young adult writing anymore but I’m going back to them to see if the meat of the stories work for me as an adult. This one didn’t lol. I mean, I do like the whole “you need to take accountability for your feelings” thing, but that was about it. Happy to get this one off my shelf.

After buying this book second hand, and having it sit on my shelf for ages, I finally picked it up.

I could not have possibly made a better decision. I was in such dire need of a fast-paced book, and this was exactly that. The story moves so quickly, and the characters all have such vibrant exciting voices, that it was almost impossible to put down. I finished it in two sittings, and the short chapters (And by short, I mean short!) made this book easy to fly through.

Highly recommend for a quick, easy read. The story is so amazing, and incredibly well-written. Despite this, please check the content warnings before you read!
