Nico di Angelo has always been a favorite of mine, so I was really excited for this. Riordan and Oshiro did not disappoint. This book healed the young queer punk kid inside me who so desperately needed it. I laughed (Nico referencing the music video for Montero by Lil Nas X SENT ME, as did hearing him say “say less”) and I cried (the dedication alone was enough to do that), and I feel like part of a wound I didn’t know was still open has closed a bit.

I had been waiting for a book with Nico as a protagonist for ages, when this book was announced I was so excited. I couldn't read it as soon as it came out, but I think it was for the best, to let my excitement subdue a little.
So, in terms of plot it really isn't the best ever, which is a shame cause a character like Nico deserves a top-tier plot. Despite that, I still enjoyed it a lot, mostly because of what it made me feel.
Now the highlight for me are the characters.
I'm gonna start with Nico, seeing him with all his light and shade is wonderful. And the fact that they addressed his trauma and his response to it was really nice, the only thing I ever wanted was for my boy to be happy and comfortable with himself and it seems that he's getting there. I actually feel like a proud mom whenever I think about the progress he's made, gosh he's been through so much pain.
On the other hand we have Will, after this book I have better understanding of his personality, and I actually love that they showed us a Will that is not a little ball of sunshine all the time (this was already established in The trials of Apollo, I'm specially thinking about the last book when he comes into a room, sees someone trying to hit Nico and tells people to get out of his way so he can get to Nico and take him away and no one even tries to stop him). This Will feels more real, he is a little ball of sunshine but he is so much more too, he's a boy with regrets, fears and a lot of courage and determination, he's even judgy which hurts cause he's judgy towards things that Nico appreciates a lot, but then he tries to understand.
I could go on forever with the characters but I won't.
I will say one last thing, though. Hades is still the best of all the gods (I was hoping to see more of him but that part with him and Nico was so wholesome).

I’ve seen a lot of valid criticism about nico outing will and it not feeling like the book matches with the others in vibe

But all i could think about was how much ambrosia and nectar they were having when the earlier books made it seem like you could only have a bit and they were eating it like normal food

I feel like nico and will referred to eachother/ were referred to by others as boyfriends way more than any other couple in the riordanverse

Also the cocoa puffs are my babies

I think Rick could have written this without a co author
