Philosophy in the Boudoir: Or, the Immoral Mentors by Marquis de Sade

E niente.

The work by de Sade that I would recommend to those who want to fully dive into libertinism. I myself was slightly dismissive of de Sade, even after having read Justine, but I come out of this book with a greater appreciation. His political critiques of Enlightenment philosophers, particularly Rousseau's social contract and Locke's treatment of philosophy, are edifying and thought-provoking. But whereas the two Enlightenment philosophers can be relegated to the school of Classical Liberalism, de Sade resists any kind of categorization. He both advocates for a redistribution of wealth through his treatment of theft as a non-crime and the political necessity of decriminalized murder. This is only one instance of a deeply jagged yet nuanced political philosophy within the book. Of course, there is also an apolitical element in the book, but it is far less interesting, and is summed up succinctly as a framework advocating the highest hedonism in sexual pleasure. Overall, the dialogue is well worth reading, and has some richer components that I did not include within this review.
