This book was also quite darker than I was expecting. I thought the sequel might be a bit lighter as we catch up with the characters, but no… This one was slightly less charming than the last due to the constant conflicts.

I think that overall, I preferred the plot direction of this instalment better than the first, even though it was at the expense of the interesting paranormal element. It just felt very cathartic. I also liked Marjorie’s character better this time - she definitely had more of a backbone. And of course, I loved Wendell. There were still some things I didn’t like, however. I think that there was a minor change in the art style but it was enough for me to notice, and also not like it. It was like fuzzier or blurrier than the first instalment? Anyway, I also didn’t like how Marjorie and her family just moved house, no big deal, no announcement, when the concept of home was so important to Marjorie in Sheets, and to her meant where they lived while her mum was still alive. Moreover, Marjorie’s dad just continued to suck in this. Finally,
I would have liked to see a bigger renouncement by Marjorie of her “friends” and a better apology from her to Eliza
.

Middle school is a complex time of social and emotional development. Marjorie continues to hang out with the ghosts that helped her heal some of her grief in the previous book, but it's hard hanging out with ghosts when you want to fit in. On her quest to fit in with her new middle school friends, she becomes complicit in the bullying of another school outcast, a ghost-obsessed photographer named Eliza. This book examines friendship, grief, bullying, suicide ideation, and other tough topics.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are interesting, the art style is engaging, and the story is satisfying. I also liked the glimpses we get into living with a grieving parent who doesn't know how to let their kids help.
