A story-within-a-story kind of fairy tale. A little too gory for a school read aloud but possibly a good recommendation for a reluctant reader.

A fast read. But deceptively so. Pullman is an excellent storyteller.

At 92 pages, this oddity by esteemed author Phillip Pullman is eloquent, well-thought out, short, disturbingly macabre, and as mad as a march hare. It's deeply gratifying and is an interesting read, to say the least. The twist and turns of the spine-chilling plot keep the satisfied reader on the edge of their seats. It's like a Gothic apperception in the art of brilliantly atmospheric fantasies in the vein of the late Leon Garfield.

Suram, suram, suram.

WHAT A CREEPY READ! I loved this one. I especially love the creepiness factor of someone telling a story, getting to the scariest part, and having the scariest person from the scariest part WALK INTO THE ROOM! Hold onto your hats ... this is a great scary read. A little bit gory, but for a young reader who likes scary stuff, this would still be fun (just make sure that they can handle some of the nastier elements)!

Perfect novella for a short car ride. A bit of a moral fairy tale regarding an apprentice clockmaker and his wish for the easy way out. I think it's fine for age 10 & up. The audible version is well narrated.

the intro!! the illustrations!! the music!! the story!! ahh!! so cool!
it felt kinda dreamy and fable-esque which was very much matched by the pointillist drawings
