This was so much fun! I wasn’t sure what to expect going in and only read it because it was recommended to me, but I’m very glad I did. A great mix of historical fantasy and queer romance. The historical atmosphere and settings were great, the magic was very interesting (hoping to learn more about it in the sequel), and the romance was absolutely lovely (a bit spicier than I was expecting but well described and I was rooting for them to get together).
Listened to this on audio and I think it was well done, although I wasn’t the biggest fan of the narrator’s voices for some of female characters.

This is the Edwardian era in England with a big dose of magic. Magicians and non-magical people live side by side but rarely intermix, and magicians are not shy about wiping the memories of non-magical people for their own convenience. Robin, who is an elder son who just stepped into the title upon his parent's death, takes what he thinks is a commonplace desk job at a government agency whose real function is deciding what magical events warrant further investigation by law enforcement. Edwin comes to see his predecessor, and it becomes clear that that the man who used to have Robin's job died as a result of an investigation he was uncovering. Edwin and Robin want to know what happened. The story is well-paced and I love the magic that's rooted in the land. The mood gets pretty dark for much of the story, but the ending is hopeful. Points for the minor characters, especially the Morissey sisters. There's a budding romance between the two men as well. I enjoyed this and will continue the series.

What a lovely story! If you want equal parts fantasty, world building and romance this is the book. The prose is fantastic and there are so many quotes within that I had to save. Well done. Excited to come back to this world.

This is an excellent new magic trilogy. The world building and character development is wonderful and I was sucked right into the adventure. There is a love story to accompany the plot and it is definitely written in bodice ripper style, readers should be aware that the protagonists are men and the sex scenes are explicit. While I didn’t particularly want the more steamy nature of the story, the scenes are well done and worth reading through for the rest of the story, which I enjoyed heartily. I will definitely read the next one.
