A splendid story. Marilyn is waiting and waiting for something that all the other kids seem to have: their own monsters. She has no fabulous creature to keep her company, to play with, to keep her from being scared at night. But everyone tells Marilyn she must simply be patient and wait. But Marilyn, determined, sets out to find HER special creature.

The story works on so many levels. It's a picture book about kids who have monsters for friends. It's a fantasy about companionship. It's--perhaps--an allegory about finding friendship or your special talent or your place in the world.

Marilyn has been waiting on her monster forever! She tries not looking for her monster, pretending she doesn't want a monster, and practicing being an interesting person. When none of these schemes work, Marilyn takes her search for her monster on the road. This book deals with waiting expectantly and putting your feet to your faith. Faith without works is dead!

3.5? A little long in the middle. I really liked the idea and the artwork but it just dragged a bit although with "edited" reading I think it would be great for any storytime. Argus still has my heart as far as Knudsen books go but a lot of fun.

Cute story found at The Julie’s Library podcast at 7AM On serendipity ✨

“And that night when Marilyn went to bed,
the dark didn’t seem so scary...” ❤️

This is a perfect picture book to reach across all ages. I love the lessons it shares - going after what you want, not being afraid to try going about things in a different way. Add this to your growth mindset collection.

I absolutely adore this book!! I literally hugged it to me after finishing. I love the girl main character who takes things into her own hands to find a solution to her problem. I love the mood evoked in the illustrations. I love the concept of the monsters every child gets to protect them. Read this. Share this. Pair it with Beekle.

All the other kids in Marilyn's class are getting their monsters. Each monster finds his or her child, until Marilyn is the only one left without one. She tries to wait patiently for it to find her, but finally takes matters into her own hands. A great story about finding your own destiny instead of waiting passively for life to happen to you. This book seems almost like the opposite of Beekle to me. It would be fun to read them together. Recommended for grades K-2.

Another winner! Perfect marriage of lovely writing and gorgeous art. And a young girl who knows her own mind. Fantastic.

Sweet story. I love that Marilyn stops waiting for things to happen and goes out to make things happen.
