I’m not usually a huge fan of murder mysteries, but this was quite good. The story was so well crafted and the characters were perfectly depicted. I was thrilled with the climatic end of the killer’s attempted escape. The narration was perfect. In some places it was a bit too graphic and more brutal than it needed to be. But, overall, a riveting yarn.

Not really a great "mystery" but well written. Kept me surprisingly interested.

An interesting mystery within a mystery.
Harper writes a compelling novel of a boy run out of town come back to pay his respects at his formerly best friend's funeral.
Aaron Falk and the rest of the cast are well written. I loved the flashbacks told from multiple points of view and the mystery within the mystery. Definitely a dry (pun intended) but good read from start to finish.

A bit slow at the start and while my initial theories didn’t hold, it was easy to put things together after one detail came to light, which made the “twist” more of a somewhat sharp turn. While not all endings are designed to be satisfying, I thought maybe less could have been more if we weren’t going to get more.

Not a book I would have picked on my own, but I quite enjoyed the writing style. Fairly predictable murder mystery, but what I enjoyed was the storytelling. A dying small rural Australian town that many an American could relate to, a kid returns home—he managed to escape, past secrets threaten to be exposed. But also, it really brought home the reality of the drought that is hitting Australia. The picture of animals dying in the fields because the rivers have dried up. This is something that I have only experienced in history books or on tv in Africa. Australia is seen as hot and hard but one doesn’t immediately think of this kind of hardship.
She crafted the character Aaron Falk well and I will probably read another from this series. The narrator was very good. I felt like I was listening to both a citified agent and rural townspeople.
If police crime is your genre, this is a good one to pick up.

Good story overall but not as great as expert critics reviews seemed to imply, not sure why this was "raved" about. Good for people who love mysteries, which is really not me.

Aaron Falk has gone home for his childhood best friend's funeral – something he would have avoided except for the cryptic note from the man's father. Aaron, now a federal agent, gets pulled into the investigation of the death of the man and his wife and son. This stirs up memories of a death from years ago. The one that made Aaron and his dad leave town.
No surprise to the killer, but good story just the same.
