I first met Dana at BookCon a few years ago, where I was introduced to the fantastic cast of the Broken Gears universe. I loved the first 2 books, and was super delighted to hear that the final book was coming soon. I definitely was not disappointed.

One thing that I have always loved about this series is the emphasis on the characters and their personalities/relationships. While there is most certainly a main plot line, the book does not rely solely on this to carry the narrative. Rather, the emphasis on characterization and exploration of other aspects of each character's sympathies/reasonings helps to create a more enriching story. As such, it is like being thrown into the middle of these characters' daily lives and creates more of an understanding of their motives.

In this latest installment, I did enjoy how the central storyline revolved around the Reaper, and also Camilla's involvement. I thought the treatment of how her trauma informs some of her decisions (and her vulnerability) was interesting and lended more more space for Camilla's character to grow.

In addition, I liked how Rook's own emotional development is stretched when he loses *spoiler* By taking that away, Dana really showcases how Rook deals with his relationships and what does a "real" one mean/constitute. I liked that he himself starts to question his own priorities, in relation to Lenore and his business, and what does it mean to care for someone deeply.

Lastly, I do like how Lenore is always given room to grow in this series. She's not written to be perfect, but she's well-intentioned, which can mean so much more. I liked that she herself is learning how to maneuver her own relationships and emotions (especially in the face of her own trauma).

I also really was pumped with Calandra showed up (I am a big fan of Dana's other book, Raven's Cry. Definitely recommend!)

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and it was a great way to end the series. Definitely recommend!

It's very tricky to wrap up a series with a book which ties all the loose ends together in a neat bow, but Dana Fraedrich manages this task with the aplomb of a seasoned author.

It begins at the end of book two, Into the Fire, where the catastrophic events in the Hall of Justice have turned Springhaven into an uneasy and volatile city.

What this excellent steampunk series has - incredible world building (Springhaven and its various Victorian districts come to life under Ms Fraedrich's pen). Characters you will fall in love with (and not only the main players, but the host of supporting characters without whom this wouldn't be as imaginative and appealing as it is - special call out to Lowell, who came into his own in this book) Vampires - yes. Kieran adds a complexity which really works with the flow of the story. Twists and turns in abundance. The author isn't afraid to put her characters in sticky situations and make them work for their money! Smart heroines - as well as the protagonist, Lenore, we have a host of other female characters who add strength and tenacity to the mix.

It's no secret that my heart belongs to Rook, crime lord and Lenore's protector, and this story really delves deep into his background, exposing his vulnerability, my very favourite kind of study.

All in all, a very easy five stars. Highly recommended if you're new to steampunk fantasy!
