Besides some casual racism, this novel has everything you'd want in a Sherlock Holmes story: a hunt for treasure, a complicated murder mystery, romance, and plenty of Sherlock's friendly condescension.

I didn't mind this one for the tale of Holmes and Watson (though goodness the man falls in love quicker than a blue hedgehog in trainers doing laps) but I disliked the plot. I really struggled staying with it until the end, though the telling of the whole story by the 'bad guy' actually wasn't the worst part so happier that I did.

The Sign of Four gets slightly better in comparison with A Study in Scarlet, with a brilliant Sherlock and a new budding romance for Watson, along with an underwhelming flashback/backstory
