⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

THE favorite read of 2023.
THE book that made me cry the most in 2023.

An experience I’ll NEVER forget. An experience that reached the deepest part of my soul. Just SO incredibly impactful. When I say that I UGLY CRIED throughout  pretty much the entire story nonstop, that’s barely an exaggeration. And when I read the last word all I wanted to do was get on this app and write down everything I was feeling about this masterpiece, but 😶. I. Have. No. Words. Honestly, I don’t possess the skills to even come close to summing up my feelings about Shark Heart, so I’ll leave it up to Emily Habeck…

“You make everything better than when you found it, even me.”

I loved this story. Despite the unnatural circumstances, these characters felt real & their tribulations felt incredibly visceral. There’s a spot in my heart for each of them.

A small part of me wishes I’d seen more of Lewis, George, Julia, and maybe even Marcos in the epilogue, but honestly I wouldn’t change a thing. I loved the account of Joy’s life!

It’s hard for me to identify why this in particular this isn’t a 5-star read for me! I think certain imaginative parts, especially regarding the mutations, pulled me out of the story at times. Not by much, but enough to kind of jar me a bit.

Regardless, I think this is a wonderfully speculative read, perfect if you’re looking for something a bit more literary but with a unique, inventive twist!

This was beautiful and masterful. I expected a story about a man Who turns into a shark, and while I got that, I also got so much more. This is truly a story about generational trauma, love, parenthood, and grief. Habeck vascillates between a script, prose, and poetry to convey the story and themes. It was...perfect.
