Madame Martine by Sarah S. Brannen

Madame Martine is very set in her ways and a little bit dull (she even has no use for the Eiffel Tower!) -- until she adopts a scruffy little dog. He jolts her out of her comfort zone when he escapes during a shopping trip, and runs all the way up the Eiffel Tower. Because she loves him, she has to chase after him -- aching knees and all. When she finally catches up to the dog, she's flooded with relief, annoyance, and...amazement! She's finally made it to the top of the tower, and it's glorious. From then on, Madame Martine is a little more daring (even switching out her drab gray dress for a bright red one), with Max as her constant companion.

I LOVED the watercolor illustrations, and how you could see the grain of the thick watercolor paper. This is a gorgeous little gem of a book, and I think it flew under a lot of peoples' radar -- only one library in our county has it so far, but I plan to purchase it for my branch.

Solid and delightful, easy to read, and wonderful way to remind children that new doesn't have to be bad.
