I don't know what it is with stories about girls disguising themselves as guys and joining a bunch of pirates, but I have yet to find one that I don't like. Some of the more climatic scenes were a bit downplayed in terms of description. This book also combines the issue of slavery and humane treatment of humans, in addition to the female role in society, introducing topics for discussion. Some of those descriptions, as well as descriptions of the self-defensive and violent scenes that made my stomach churned as I listened to it in my car, leads me to suggest this book be reserved for at least age 14.

The good slave owner trope was too much. Could not get past it.

I read this when I was in high school and loved it so much! Always loved anything to do with pirate stories and I loved the new perspective this provided. A lot of strong woman fighting a life they did not want and fighting for themselves. Looking forward to reading again!

during an eye-opening move to her family's slave-run plantation in jamaica, nancy finds out she is betrothed to a creepy brazilian more than twice her age. hoping to instead marry her childhood sweetheart, she and minerva, her slave/best friend/half sister join a band of borderline well-behaved pirates for a swashbuckling adventure on the high seas, with the creepy brazilian hot on the trail.

you don't run across adventure books of this caliber for teen girls very often. i love this book and everything it stands for.

A truly lovely read. Very predictable at times, hence the 4 star rating, but wonderfully woven with historical detail and fact. An exciting read about two female pirates and how they defied all odds to protect each other and find adventure.

A pretty quick listen, well developed characters and relationships, with a meandering plot. I wasn’t convinced by the love story side-plot, but it wasn’t annoying. Overall an enjoyable read.

Third time reading this and I still love it. The fact that I've read it for the third time in much the same way and excitement as I did the first time says a lot. Somehow the story doesn't get old and I will probably enjoy it a fourth and even a fifth time.

It's light reading (as YA usually is), which makes it very pleasant. The story itself is adventurous and has two fierce female leads that any young girl should look up to.
