great thriller/mystery with a largely unforeseen twist ending . . . very well done for a first-time novelist

The way the book was structured (half letter/half diary) was extremely confusing.

(Review originally written for my book club.) I'd never heard of this book or author before it was suggested for book club. A friend not in book club had given it two stars (the same friend who had given Replay five stars and considered it one of his favorite books). Despite my doubts, I ended up really enjoying the book. I was eager to find out whodunnit, but the book's strength is in Lupton's portrayal of Bee and Tess's relationship. Maybe I liked it so much because I could identify with Bee, her need for order and the way this tragedy upsets her worldview. Not all the characters are sympathetic, but they seemed very real, and I could empathize with them.

I suspect people who do not like the book either find the characters irritating or think there wasn't much of a mystery.
SpoilerI did wonder if the most helpful character would turn out to be the killer—a twist I'm familiar with from crime shows—but I only thought about that a page or so before the reveal. The ending did seem a little abrupt, of the it-was-all-a-dream! variety. It didn't distract from my essential appreciation of the story. It seemed fitting, in a way, that the story should be presented as a letter from Bee to her sister, given their history of writing to each other.

Sister is a much different book than i'd usually choose but I was looking for something quick, easy and enjoyable and this exceeded my expectations.

I really liked the device of one sister writing the other a letter. The characters felt real, the language was visual without being overworked and the story had a good pace. I'd read that the author is most known as a script-writer and this is evident; this book could easily be translated into a good film.

While the story clipped along, I must admit that when it started to seem who the likely killer was I had to flip back a fair bit into the book to remind myself who this person was.

At times, about page 100, I felt the story slowed and there was some repetition throughout where the writing could have been tightened.

I enjoyed this book much more than I expected and would recommend it for a quick and enjoyable read.

All was good and thriller like until the last chapter. It just didn’t do it for me. The clinical trial stuff was pretty cool. Just seeing my career field in a story gives me some type of good feeling.
