I admittedly thought this was a book of ghost stories written BY Roald Dahl, but it’s just a collection of others’ that he found & bundled his favorites. The stories are old, & they’re mostly just okay. More than once I’ve found myself not really wanting to pick up the book, even though they’re short stories to get through.

I didnt read every story in the collection. I picked it up mostly for the introduction. In it, Dahl talks about his hunt for truly spooky ghost stories and about why they are so difficult to write well. Fascinating insight. A few of the stories were ones I had read before, some felt dated, others were entertaining and new to me.

Most of the stories I read weren't that great so I didn't think it necessary to plow on through the rest

A few of the stories are good. I found quite a few of them disappointing. However, the preface that explains the reason for the book was the most interesting part.

Although some of the stories included in this book were actually quite good, I couldn't help being disappointed. I guess I was expecting that since Roald Dahl himself handpicked these stories, they would measure up to his own. I expected that I would have to sleep with the light on for the next couple of weeks, but was only mildly creeped out on several occassions.
