i half listened to half read this book. the emotional moments hit me as hard as a hokusai wave. loved the shifts in the methods of story telling. and i would highly recommend this version of the audiobook, the reader does an excellent job. i could hear her voice when i read it to myself. family, friendship, love all tangled up in the very foreign world (to me at least) of gaming. highly recommend.

The prose in this book is wonderful, I think the parts I most appreciated were how the author chose to demonstrate the feelings of relationships over time. The prose to describe tautologies of life, love, and time really got me. Sam & Sadie are such real people, and their conflicts are very real as well. Their relationship was confusing and vulnerable. I do not understand their character development toward the end...it felt a little bit unrealistic. They both went through a lot together, but I don't understand how that made them change their less savory qualities. But maybe that's the whole point...not sure. I also think that the way the author described pain(esp. with sam) was so accurate and it really put me in their shoes. I read this book over the span of a couple months in university and it was really easy to pick back up where i started, i think this is because time is not a linear element in this book. It is both a constant and a variable haha. i love stories told like this is allows to have a deeper element to storytelling. not a lot of plot in the beginning but increases as we climax towards the end(as it is normally with these types of life-spanning novels) ugh i have to talk about marx. he was my favorite. maybe i related to him but i also think he wasn't given enough of a story and fight. was the author able to get over this by just calling him an npc? is that enough? he freaking died bro and his death chapter 'the npc' was amazing but did it mean anything for his character specifically? he was just a means to an end. he deserved more but did i like him the most cause i didn't know as much about him? was he not as real as sadie and sam? love was really interesting. i thought about why people love each other. but at the end of the day does it really matter why? as long as they do? its so complicated. the video game metaphor was genius i think all the characters had a purpose(even though marx deserved more) lot of themes in this box lot of depth i would remember something had been covered and i was like was that this book? damn great book but i would take ur time with it its not meant to be read all at once you need to sit with the characters to fully grasp them would i ever read the book again? i feel like i might get more out of it but it is quiet thick in terms of details and lore but one day i felt myself trying to piece together the metaphor all the time so i might need to read it again anyway the books prose is a little unnatural and the dialogue unnatural as well at times, but i think the author was trying to express something that people don't realize until they are moments away from death so i will cut her some slack, the book is worth the time and has lots of references and metaphors and a non-linear prose style pick it up

I ended up enjoying this book a lot and I went through it quickly though I think it can't really be considered a quick read because it's quite long and wordy.

The three of them should’ve been locking lips and hunching all together and there would’ve been less conflict. They were all made for each other. Down with monogamy!

A beautiful book that I took my time reading. A story about growth and reflection and coming of age and most of all, of course, video games the whole way. Zevin knew what was important to include and where to take creative liberties. A book I will gladly take off the shelf and read again.
