This book was recommended by a friend and I got it through the library. I ran out of time on the library book, and I found myself not wanting to put a hold on it again. I read a synopsis of the rest of the book and I'm glad that I didn't. To me, the book read like a series of tropes strung together, paired with (alternately) unrealistically dense or pseudo-enlightened characters. I found the discussions of creativity somewhat enjoyable, but the author has an annoying tendency of overselling a point. I enjoy books that really create a setting, or explain characters well, but this book just took it too far; to the point where even some of the comma-separated lists that the author writes are ten or more examples long. Finally, this book really should come with a content warning; it was on my friend's kids high school reading list but includes: BDSM, Polyamory, LGBTQ issues, Suicide, and a great variety of other topics.

"His brain was treacherously negative."

This book was beautifully written, wonderfully descriptive and an overall great portrayal of the ups and downs of friendship in a creative environment. I'll be thinking about this one for a while.
It just missed the fifth star for me just as I felt the plot was slightly wavering at points but overall I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to read!

I wish I had read the content warnings before reading, as some parts of the book were quite intense. I liked the structure of the book, particularly at the beginning when the reader gets glimpses into the future of the characters. I also liked getting a look into the creative process of the video games and how the characters careers developed. However, I found the book depressing as many bad things happen to the characters over the course of the book, many of these I felt lacked closure or enough discussion for it to be meaningful or hopeful, it was just too harsh. The characters are chronically mean to each other and although there are moments of positive interactions, these are overshadowed by the many negative things that happen.

I found the progression of Sadie's career especially depressing, while it may be common for a women's work to be attributed to male collaborators, this gave a bleak perspective on what it is like to be a woman in a male-dominated field. I also didn't like that her love life was so tied to her career, this made her character seem flat and played into the idea that men can't see women as equal colleagues and there will always be romantic undercurrents in the workplace.

Marx seems to be one of the most virtuous characters in the book, and he is punished for this by being killed off, adding to the depressing feel of the book.

When I started this book I was bored by the clunky and self indulgent writing, and annoyed by the peak White Feminism critique of trauma and cultural appropriation that was far less thoughtful and nuanced than the Barbie movie.

The root of my dissatisfaction is that reading about a character playing a game is like reading about a character working out…fun when you do it yourself, excruciating when we read the minutiae of another’s experience.

The strongest part of this book is its work with grief, and the metaphors around gaming in relation to grief and loss. That grabbed me in the second half and kept me reading.

But the writing feel excessively overwrought with not enough payoff in either plot or observations on the human condition to make me enjoy reading it.

I cannot express how much I came to loathe many of the characters, particular Dov, the sexual harasser and groomer who (spoiler) gets a fucking redemption arc at the end of the book.

I was surprised that there were fewer attributions than I would expected in the authors note as I recognized many of the book’s references, and Sadie in particular was prone to insightful wanderings that so had definitely read before.
