A beautiful book that I took my time reading. A story about growth and reflection and coming of age and most of all, of course, video games the whole way. Zevin knew what was important to include and where to take creative liberties. A book I will gladly take off the shelf and read again.

Gosh I wanted to love this book but I just like it only. 

Some parts were so beautifully written, and others pure cringe. 
I had zero attachment to the characters and their awful relationships with each other. I wanted to see more actual development and working through this issues and instead it was just one frustrating conversation after another. 

The first part of the book gave me hope that would be A Little Life - light version,

focusing on Sam’s foot and personal tragedy and his friends rallying around to help him recover. But instead Sadie decided after he is hospitalized to be angry with him for his perceived ulterior motives. It was a strange turn in the story that I did not enjoy. 

Further, I had zero love for Marx. When he died I didn’t care. Although I will say the narrative for that part was excellent. 

After Marx’s death it was just an okay story. I think the author tried to comment on gun violence in America with that entire part of the story. There were too many holes there. Sadie’s reaction to his death was over the top and Sam’s reaction was not within his character.

Overall, I was okay with this story. I did not love, in fact the last third of the book was a total let down.

Sadie Green and Sam Masur. A beautiful relationship between two people. This book will be challenging me for a long time post read to evaluate my relationships with people and recognize how important these people are and can be in my life. Emotional story, beautifully written, this will stick with me.

This book is great. It’s not like Ready Player One. It’s kind of like The Social Network but with mildly more sympathetic characters at its core. It’s ultimately about the work/life balance of three friends that start a video game company together told through the eyes of 2 out of the 3 of them. It also might be peak late Gen-X/Early Millennial nostalgia in terms of the video games referenced and it essentially inserts itself into how things actually happened in reality. Please note the sexism, misogyny and racist tendencies the characters Sam, Marx and their family members came across is realistically depicted. There’s also an active shooter situation depicted in the novel so be aware if it triggers you. One character also engages in an inappropriate relationship with a person with authority over them and mind if it triggers you. One character has a mobility disability and there’s vivid depictions of his struggles with medical care and health. There is suicide and car accidents depicted as well.

Triggers are either actively in there or suggested somewhere throughout the book. I honestly might have missed some but I really enjoyed this book and its depiction of the years shown and how Zevin’s characters lived through those times.

this was a challenging read. dense and term-heavy i caught a few of the references but felt that it would be better enjoyed by a real gamer. regardless, this was incredibly well written, with nuanced characters and struggles. it wasn’t what i was expecting, and maybe that was for the better?

it presents itself as an incredibly slow burning romance between sadie and sam and ultimately results in.. not that? slow burning friendship (?) i enjoyed the acknowledgement that not all love is romantic and that there are things more important than romance, but still found the change in tone resulting from marx’s death to be really hard to read. it felt like the plot derailed a little bit, emphasizing the need for that third person in sadie/sam’s relationship, especially marx. feeling conflicted over this. bumping it a bit bc im realizing how conflicted i really feel lol
