Following Neil and the other Foxes through this book is definitely a ride as we get to know everyone else and their reasons to be a Fox in Wymacks team.
The writing style is a tad better, the characters aren't that stereotypical anymore, but it's still not really good.
The development and the stories of every single Fox tho, that's what actually makes these books so good, seeing them growing as a found family, overcoming their past struggles and helping eachother through them, that's what makes these books as good as they are.

Neil being oblivious that they are his friends (Nicky actually telling him, that yes indeed they're friends), him feeling "weird" whenever someone does something for him, it's heartbreaking and oh so bittersweet to see him finally having an actual support system, feeling free and careless, I love it!

This book starts a bit slow and turns into a rollercoaster of emotions, it prepares everything for the last book while being better than the first installment of the series. It's not the best, but so much better than the first and makes you really fall in love with the characters!

I forgot how quickly everything happens in this series.

This book has plenty of whump as Neil firmly plants himself into this dysfunctional family, thus constantly putting himself in harm's way for the Foxes. And then there is the fact that everyone knows about Neil's budding relationship except for him.

Violence and trauma are in large abundance in this one; read all trigger warnings.

Halfway through inputting the content warnings, I realized it might be faster to point out which ones don’t apply.

Content warnings aside, I’m still gonna read the third book.

Can I, in good conscience, recommend this book to a normal person? Probably not
Has the "you know, I get it" speech irrevocably rewired my brain chemistry? Absolutely

I can't say that I wasn't expecting the series to get darker but good lord did this book get gruesome. I could definitely feel more of a story structure here and I couldn't put it down once the plot really started to kick in. The growing relationships between Neil and the rest of the Foxes was sweet to see but of course, it's his slow and almost sweet development with Andrew that really makes The Raven King a good read for me. I'll definitely be holding onto my wits with the last book.
