This is such a beautiful and thought provoking story.
May, a botanist, decided to use her extended time off to visit 4 "friends who she has not seen or even kept in touch with, in a long while. During her preparation for travel and visiting her friends, she muses about what friends are and how to properly host and be a host. May uses trees, definitions, and quotations to examine these topics.
I plan on keeping this book out on lamp table in the living room. I plan on going back to this book, reexamining friends and visiting friends. From this book, I decided I want my visits to friends to be much more personal and intimate. May is awkward, sometimes aloof, but she always cares and wants her visits and relationships to be real and deep.
I loved this book!

3.5 A lovely read about loneliness and friendship. I’ve read so many 20-something female friendship novels in the past few years that it’s very refreshing to get one about 40-somethings. And it’s female friendships and the difficulty of maintaining them over time rather than the toxic potentials of such friendships. There is something special about this book and the way it makes you feel.

Okay three thoughts:
1) The audiobook is great - highly recommend it!
2) If you've ever questioned what your friendships look like as an adult woman... this book exactly explains what it's like.
3) If you're looking for some fast-paced, contemporary... this isn't that. it's slow. There's not a lot actually happening, but it's really thoughtful and I genuinely enjoyed reading it.
