The White Dragon by Anne McCaffrey

These things are paced like each book is an entire tv drama series. McCaffrey loves a little action. I love Ruth and I wish we would get more of her in future books but something tells me we don’t. This scene where menolly and the Harper confess they love each other??? Pointless. Completely pointless. Useless addition, Anne. Unnecessary daddy issues, Anne. No thank you. And the way Jaxom treats his first love interest is also unreasonable. Interesting character building choices to say the least.

Fun nostalgia, but definitely not the best Pern book. Jaxom is kind of a choad.

I am re-reading this book because I decided to complete the Pern series. OMG, I was shocked at how many things I didn't remember. Interesting development and discoveries about Pern's history. Looking forward to learning more.

Like the other Pern books, I liked it as an adult, but not as much as when I was a kid.

My rereads continue, as do McCaffrey's issues with writing female characters and dubcon romance.

I want to like these books, and the world building is still very good, but she just is completely unable to avoid misogyny in her female characters. Very few are named, and even less are not narratively described as fat, ugly, lazy, stupid,  meddling, bossy, or bitchy. Men, even the antagonists, never get this treatment.

Also, the robinton menolly moment? Weird weird weird weird. She was FIFTEEN when she met him and he was already middle aged then. No Thank You.

I don't know. it really is just a massive stain on all her writing, and I think this is the last book of hers I'll be reading.
