This book was so mind-boggling. I was so wrapped up in the story I read it so much more quickly than I was expecting. It's a "modern-day" (1920s) version of the tales of Munchausen and it was so fun to read. It was satirical and exaggerated even though it wasn't so much a chronological story as a piecing together of a bunch of random tales told in different settings. The whole "truth in lies" thing made me understand why Munchausen syndrome has the name it does

Very Pynchon-esque prose, and quite hilarious at times, but tough to get into

I got this with a NYRB books subscription a couple of years ago and am trying to read books that have been sitting on my shelf for a while. It was clear pretty quickly that this isn't my kind of thing. I'm not generally that into stories of quirky fabulists. And it doesn't help that this is chock a block with references to people, places, and ideas that I have little more than a glancing familiarity with. Even as short as it is, it doesn't seem likey to be worth the time and effort for me.
