There are countless versions of this story out there both in print and on the Hallmark channel: plucky, uncouth American falls for amazingly attractive and sweet heir to a European throne who feels trapped by his stodgy and dysfunctional royal family. The Royal We is different because it was really well written. For one thing, it covers an 8 year period instead of just a whirlwind courtship with a predictable happy ending. We meet the main characters, Rebecca "Bex" Porter and Nicholas "Nick" Wales when they are young Oxford students not thinking about much beyond the next party, and follow them as they and their relationship mature. Nick is a member of a slightly fictionalized version of England's royal family, but there are enough details pulled from real life research to make one wonder how much of this could actually be true. Bex's struggles with her loss of privacy and autonomy in her unique situation were particularly realistic. I also liked the side characters, from the Oxford friends who persisted in their lives long term to Nick's younger brother Freddie, who deserves his own book. Four and a half stars because it was a little too long and there were too many undeveloped characters with long British aristocratic names I couldn't keep straight.

I like the Fug Girls, so it pains me to say this was rather terrible. Words like these are uttered unironically: "I am completely, utterly, irrevocably in love with you". That's enough to put you off romance forever.

Although I am a lover and follower of the royal family in real life, I didn’t really enjoy this book. It was too dull for me. There were too many pages with too much information and not enough dialogue. So, although I liked the characters of Nick and Bex, I just didn’t enjoy the overall book

I got SO, SO far in this book and it's honestly really good! It was just SO LONG and so hard to read over a short period of time (especially for a college student!) I think I would have enjoyed it a lot if it was split up into two books. But basically it was so hard to pick this book back up once I put it down for a while, which is why I sadly have to mark it as DNF.

***UPDATED REVIEW** 3.5 stars
I finally finished the book!! Yay!!! I just decided to pick up where I left off and push through until the end. I actually was really into the story, I just think that I needed a break from it. I would've given the story a 4, but that ending was TERRIBLE! I mean, it was good, they finally got married, but they didn't even solve the main conflict with Clive? Ugh! I hate endings that don't finish neatly and leave you wondering. SO because of that, it's 3.5 stars

This is most definitely going to remain a 2020 fav. I’m not kidding when I say you’ll get ALL the feels- joy, sadness, hope, irritation, AND you’ll laugh.

This book was on my to read list for awhile so when I finally read it, I did not think this book would be the rollercoaster that it was. I came in thinking it would be a cute love story but it is so much more. I felt like Nick and Bex were real people and I felt their emotions from beginning to end. Any book that makes me gasp or even shed a tear is one I will always suggest to friends.

I think I expected too much of this book - it was perfectly fine, just not what I thought it would be. My main issue was that I felt the main relationship was way too dysfunctional - and we're supposed to be rooting for them to get married? Other than that, it was a fun read, and I enjoyed the thinly veiled references to, ahem, actual royals. Gotta love some almost-RPF.
