honestly surprised at how much i like this story! if youā€™re a fan of ā€œThe Cruel Princeā€ you would absolutely enjoy this. I would say more than anything this is a definitely a story about love and that could mean a lot of different things in this story but i think itā€™s the most underrated part about it that regardless of the fantasy and the creative action and the tenseness and the plot twists and the characters and the world-building that i absolutely loved, I really enjoyed the theme of love and its complications which is a running motif in this book that you also see happeningĀ  more between the lines, but Oraya really come to understand the complexity of love and what it really means in the middle of such an intense story. i feel like i truly understand who she is and understand her inner monologue. I loved this book! Loved the writing, the pacing, the characters, and the world building. And although i liked the ending and it made sense with where the book was going, it felt a little rushed and confusing. I was going to rate it 4 stars but there were so many loose ends left that it dropped the rating to 3.75. I still throughly enjoyed this book though!

The general idea is cool but it is not a well-written book. It started out weak with a lot of lore dumping but I was told itā€™d get better toward the end. It unfortunately did not. In fact, Iā€™d argue it got worse. The book reads as if the author was figuring out what would happen as she wrote and did not check whatever sheā€™s written before. Plot points appear exactly when they are convenient without any prior mentioning or foreshadowing, just to move the plot along. You donā€™t really get to see the main character earn her victories, they just fall into her lap because she is better than everyone else or lucky in that moment (again, convenient plot points). The characters are unlikeable and side characters just act as tools to move the plot along. The dialogues are weak and characters fail to respond to urgency in a logical way. The final plot twists in the end were half predictable and half ridiculous because it's another convenient plot point that was just never mentioned as a concept before.

I think this book is just a long build-up to the smut and the eventual forced proximity romance thing. If youā€™re looking for a well-written coherent adventure, this is not it. It also just barely resembles the Hunger Games. All they have in common is the concept of a game with one winner. Oraya is not thrown into a sudden environment where death is around every corner.
In fact, she lives in a luxury apartment, and the trials happen in 3 week intervals.
Most of the story takes place between the trials.
