This book is like the hunger games if Katniss was Snow’s adoptive daughter. This is Feyre’s trials if she were voluntarily competing. Against Rhys. This is grumpy sunshine but she’s the grumpy one. So fantastically grumpy. This is not really trying to be enemies to lovers bcs tbh they actually really like each other, but they’re also about to be forced to unalive each other. So I guess it is rivals to lovers until…just read and find out. This is man, nay vampire obsessed, and how.Â
Raihn, apart from being a Simp, is a badarse mofo, and a competitor in the game of thrones. Umm sorry wrong book. I mean in the Kejari. And he has wings. Idk what more y’all need to recommend him. He also has a dark past and secrets, but who doesn’t really. Oraya may be a puny human, but she matches him dark past to dark past. Oh, and she’s a not so puny lethal warrior training her entire life for this moment. Bcs girl wants to be more than a puny human. She doesn’t realize she already is, so much more. She’s prickly and defensive and vi0lent and scrappy, and will cut a bish.Â
Their banter is somehow both sweet and cutting, and their chemistry is a slow burn, simmering from a reluctant friendship into an explosion of Nightfire. Mostly it’s my favorite thing to watch Raihn watch Oraya eviscerate everyone (including him) verbally and literally with hearts in his eyes.Â
The romance is romancing, but the most pivotal relationship of this book to me is that of Vincent and Oraya. He may be her father, savior, and protector but he’s also the ruthless king and witnessing the duality of his character through the eyes of the daughter of his heart is both gut wrenching and often uncomfortable. Both manipulator and mentor, Oraya’s conflicting emotions over his actions is so real. Their bond is complex, as parental relationships often are, but make it supernatural and way more intense. It’s giving Thanos and Gamorra. But like a slightly more sympathetic Thanos.
The trials themselves are brutal and bl00d soaked, and the vampires are cold and hard and mrdrous. They truly do have the skin of a k!ller, Bella. Anyway these are no benevolent heroes. Raised as they are in vi0lence and forged through bl00dshed, they are all morally grey as they must be to survive. In a bid to do so, kingdoms are ruined and so are lifelong bonds. And while I was predicting 💩 was about to go down at the end, even I did not quite see that ending coming. Tbh I’m glad it’s a complete duet but I also don’t know how everything will be resolved in one book because what the heck just happened?! 😥 I’m so ready to see Oraya come all knives (or swords) out though.
