Smart, hilarious web comic about, among other things, historical figures & events. Kate does her research! I'm so glad I stumbled on haravagrant.com & this book & highly recommend both.

Not my style, nor my humor. I can understand that this is supposed to be absurd, but it strikes me as simply puerile. I'm frustrated that so many celebrate the intellectualism of the content and observe that you have to be familiar with literature, history, and culture to fully appreciate it. I understand the references, I simply don't find what Beaton does with them to be funny. That said, I do acknowledge an audience for this; to each his own.

I kept having to put this book down to look up the historical figures I did not recognize, which were quite a few as Beaton hails from Canada. However, this is a quality point in favor of this book. The humor waxes and wanes, and possibly I didn’t get some of the humor because of the unfamiliarity with the subjects, but I did learn a few things and had some decent chuckles, which are good things all round.

A wonderful collection of cartoons from the web comic of the same name. Open this book to the first strip and you will find a perfect sample of Beaton's work: it is literary, irreverent, and above all funny. Topics range from Jane Eyre to Robinson Crusoe and from Sherlock Holmes to Shakespeare. Within a few pages, Beaton will take you to the French Revolution and then introduce you to "Sexy Batman" and the "1980's Power Businesswoman." There is an entire series of strips that consists of interpretations of old Nancy Drew book covers. So good; I couldn't put it down.
