I haven't really read any of Peter David's 2099 series, and this volume didn't inspire me to seek out any other volumes. The writing and character motivations seemed very late eighties/early nineties comics. If you removed the familiar Marvel personas of Captain America and Iron Man, and told me this was part of [a:Matt Wagner|9934|Matt Wagner|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1308067280p2/9934.jpg]'s early [b:Mage, Book One: The Hero Discovered|160865|Mage, Book One The Hero Discovered|Matt Wagner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1390956476l/160865._SY75_.jpg|155266] work, I'd have believed you.

I do prefer dated superhero writing to bad superhero writing but I expect better of Peter David. I re-read his X-Factor last year, and it is head and shoulders above this.

I guess if you enjoy his 2099 series, you might think this was still a shocking good superhero book, but if you aren't already familiar with it, I don't think this is the book to make you give a shock.

I didn't expect that Miguel O'Hara not being Spiderman 2099 was disastrous... and made the Battleworld 2099 irrelevant. It was fun, nevertheless.

While I never read that many 2099 books when they came out I don't recall there being an Avengers team. Horrid copies of current heroes. This was bad IMO.

World building sure minimal (there were maybe vampires, and Cap might have been an android). Still it was a fun read. But really, how was morally ambiguous spiderman surprised that an individual programed to be Captain America would eventually stop following orders?
