• Location(s) of the crime: 5/10
Small house in a little countryside town.

• Variety of suspects: 8/10
Family members of the deceased and some quirky townspeople

• Concealment of the culprit: 10/10
Didn’t see this one until Poirot’s exhibition in the last 3 pages.

• Interesting character motivations: 3/10
Just inheritance money this time

• Poirot being extra nice to a character or two: 4/10, but Hastings being 100% a dog person 10/10.

Didn’t deduce murderer. Another one where I think having multiple morally ambiguous/bad people would have been more interesting.

Agatha Christie fooled me again.
Damn, I really thought I was going to figure this one out.
SpoilerOkay, I did think at one point that Bella was guilty. After all, she seemed the most innocent (from my point of view). But the moment the whole act with her being afraid of her husband started, I was sure that Bella was the victim here, and that even if she had committed the murder, it was at her husband's bidding. Her death was the final nail in the metaphorical coffin of her guilt. But Agatha Christie played with our expectations so well. She very well understood what the masses would think-the woman must be the victim on account of her being a woman. Who would've suspected poor old Bella?

The other delight of the book, apart from the murder and Poirot's little grey cells working, was the adorable little terrier, Bob.
How dare they accuse Bob of being responsible for his mistress's accident? They should apologise to him.
SpoilerAnd I'm so glad Hastings took Bob in. They were a match made in heaven.

Considering that this was a book I was originally apprehensive about (because I had already read all of the peak Agatha Christie books, and I didn't think any book could top that) but I eventually gave in and had such a fun (and anxious) time reading this.
(I wouldn't consider this as my favourite Christie though-that position still belongs to The Murder of Roger Ackroyd)
So, yeah. It was a great book to dive back into my 2017 obsession with Agatha Christie novels (Christie Mystery?), and I am certainly looking forward to reading all of her Poirot mysteries, if not all of her books.
