Some very slow essays that I had to push myself through, but the ones i did like had me completely entranced. She breaks down our connection (or obsession?) with social media and how our lives are becoming regurgitations of what we see online, like where is the line between online and offline. does it even exist anymore???

I know now she doesn't believe in it but I want to marry Jia Tolentino.

Excellent book of essays. Great audio as the author narrates it herself and I always think that adds so much to the listening experience. I do wish I had a physical copy (or at least hadn't been listening while I was driving) so I could make notations or something because a number of times she would make a point that was poignant and perfectly phrased and I would think "wow, I'd like to remember that" but by the time I got home it was gone from my mind.

I found the whole collection really articulate and insightful. She has a very clear way of conveying her points and I was never confused which is always nice. My favourite essays were Pure Heroines, Reality TV Me and The Cult of Difficult Women. There were some other really interesting ones like The Story of a Generation in Seven Scams and Ecstasy.

This was very enjoyable to listen to. I nodded along to a lot of points in some essays and found myself fascinated by what she raised in others. I do think there were a few where things got a little too wordy and she took the very long way to make her point, dragging out the essay a bit but otherwise a very good book.

First essay was fire; lost steam (for me) after that and I felt fine abandoning the book. Glad I read that first one though.

3.5 stars. i have a love-hate reaction to this book - there are plenty of snippets that are so utterly brilliant and exquisitely written, but i can’t shake the nagging suspicion that there’s a target on my back labeling me as the prime audience for these essays, which are so laser-focused on telling me how i should feel and think. can’t deny she’s a talented writer with a finger steadily and precisely on the pulse of society and culture.

Thought provoking and well written essays. I really loved some of them. A couple of them felt like they didn’t fit in with the others. It felt like all together in one book it was missing a theme.
