Liked it, but didn't love it.

A short and rather refreshing fantasy inspired by Vietnamese culture. It was rather easy to devour and the only reason I didn't finish it all in one day is because I got distracted by outside forces. Part of me feels like this could have been even better if it was novel-length and more details were given.

SpoilerMy only real gripe with this is that I didn't at all believe in the newfound romance between Thanh and Giang, but I'm pleased that Thanh admitted to not actually being in love with Giang yet and that their burgeoning story is left open-ended.

Too much like political intrigue so I tuned out for a lot of it.

This was delightful, as de Bodard's books generally are - slow-paced but thoughtful. It is not so much a romance as an exploration of an emotionally abusive/toxic relationship, both political and personal, and the story of the main character's coming into her own.
