Exquisitely sad and beautiful. Geraldine Brooks is my favourite historical fiction writer. Also this was written pre-COVID, but the various ways the characters responded to an epidemic was spot-on. Made me glad I live in the twenty-first century.

A very interesting story based on history of a real village that voluntarily isolated itself to prevent the spread of the plague to other villages. Very  I pressed that even though this book was written before COVID pandemic, so many of the strategies used to prevent spread of the bacteria in 1665, were used to prevent spread of Coronavirus in early 2020s. Interesting also was that the mental health impact and social consequences similar. Has the human race changed much?

This is a fascinating exploration of how fear changes people and societies. It’s prescient, too. Written in 2001, it’s an apt book for our own times.

This book was so well written! I was transported back to 1666! And I love Anna as the narrator. The ending was very unusual.
