Professor Back’s sociological work has been rather important, and to read his views & experiences of academia is a privilege indeed. It’s the kind of diary that you savour- I read it on short train rides into the city (from, ironically, around the corner from Goldsmiths, and my neighbourhood is the setting for some of his thoughts on university & community), with cups of tea to keep me company as I sigh over his vision and hope for academia. It isn’t always one I witness and experience as a PhD student, but it is one I yearn for and hope to someday contribute to. It’s, in writing, the academia I hope for. A gorgeous read, it’s a book I want to gift my supervisors when I finish my viva in 2020.
