We chose this as had really enjoyed the way Painter of Silence was written. This book was difficult because dealt with whaling and was very graphic.

The main part of the book - the description of the winter the eponymous hero spends alone in the Arctic for the sake of a bet - is fascinating and powerful. The bits tacked on - his history and his later peregrinations around East Anglia where he has developed a reputation as a healer - are less good. They do explain why he took on the challenge, and the lasting effects of that winter, but his solitary heart is mysterious to the end.
