I am scared to rate this because it is lower because of my inadequacy, not the books. I felt like I didn't understand a lot of it because of language barriers and no knowledge for the history that it discussed, but HEY maybe that is the point? Or I just could not be the right person this book was for. Anyways, three stars isn't bad (making this VERY clear). There were lots of good smidgens that I was underlinging because I was thinking, "okayyyy this is niceeeeee" but then there was also a lot of "???" so i feel like three stars is perfect. looking forward to a further discussion and reading reviews :)

The tongue that is forbidden is your own mother tongue. You speak in the dark. In the secret. The one that is yours. Your own. You speak very softly, you speak in a whisper. In the dark, in secret.
Mother tongue is your refuge.

Definitely went over my head several times, but I would be remiss not to acknowledge the sheer breadth and depth of Dictee. It is multidisciplinary. It is poetry, it is autobiography, it is a historical biography, it is a charter of martyrs. It holds the voice, heavy as water, of one of the brightest and most brilliant writers of contemporary literature.

Worth a read, even if experimental nonfiction/life writing isn't your thing.

Didn't read the whole thing but read multiple different excerpts for class and very much enjoyed it- will probably be buying the book and reading the whole thing in the future.

This is a masterful work of Contemporary Art. Cha takes her reader on a journey to understand space, time, and memory through the lens of Korean history. Cha also takes the reader on a journey to understand Korean history through the lens of space, time, and memory.

To understand what Cha is saying, we must evaluate the visuals. To understand the visuals, we must evaluate the text. This cycle between words and images drive Cha's Dictee, as well as the nine Greek muses.
