I skimmed through the last probably quarter of the book just trying to find what happened. I wanted to know, but honestly didn't really care. I didn't even have high expectations, but this book still failed to deliver. Possibly because almost every character you meet until about the 50% point, will die a few pages after you meet them except for the main character. So I would start to connect or make notes of who these people were, only to have them die a short time later. And their deaths were mostly meaningless. They died only because there was an enemy nearby.

While this isn’t a book that will take you away it is still a good read. I give it 4/5 stars for its magic system and unique tropes for its genera. Only thing holding it back is how much is kept hidden at the beginning and in the middle of the book.

Runebinder's world-building was very well done. There was no info-dump, but I was also not left wondering how/why the current situation came about. Basically, the information was revealed very smoothly. The magic system was also explained clearly. Tenn, as a lead character, was interesting (with strengths and weaknesses that were logical, not plot points), and I especially liked the fact that his being gay was not his defining character trait. The secondary characters, especially Devon and Dreya were also quite interesting, and the villains had their moments too. I do wonder what
Spoilerinformation Tomas has on Jarrett though. Maybe nothing, but...
I wasn't really expecting the book to end how it did; fortunately [b:Runebreaker|37486950|Runebreaker (The Runebinder Chronicles #2)|Alex R. Kahler|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1513151787s/37486950.jpg|59097875] is out later this year. Based on the synopsis, it looks like Tomas is up to his old tricks which will not bode well.
