Wanted to see if this classic still holds up. Definitely has some problematic elements, and there are so many questions I want answered!

Lots of showing not telling. Very action packed. The plot was interesting but pacing felt off.

Flat characters. An important relationship is not built up enough in the beginning for the end to have much emotional impact.

The main character (and most of his friends) are unsympathetic and absolute jerks. He harasses/assaults the only major female character (who also happens to be one of the few likable characters) as a “joke.” It is implied that he gets another girl pregnant, and when she tries to tell him he basically ignores her. This behavior fits his character archetype I guess, but is not in any way condemned, and actually seems to be rewarded.  It seems like we are supposed to like and root for this character which is a huge turnoff.

Violent, bizarre, brutal, grotesque with, somehow, a pinch of Stranger Thing.

I liked the style and the pacing of the plot, though again—as I always seem to mention in my manga reviews, is that misogyny and undertones of homophobia is a persistent shadow in such novels. I loved the art style and felt that these characters had more potential had they been given more attention in their own narrative. Every character seems to be the same? In thought and behavioral thinking. In the entirety of the 300+ pages only one female character is memorable and (somewhat important) and not to mention already fallen a victim to a potential sexual harassment from the main character.
Oh- and the interesting relationship these young people have with over-the-counter drugs and drug abuse in general is fascinating—to say the least. It isn’t addressed as a problem or as worrisome as it felt to me. Every single one of these 15 year olds are popping drugs like it’s candy and not one character cared to explain why?? It even came to a point where the usage of drugs came to such an extend where I believed these kids could have died if this were reality.
I have a love and hate relationship with manga but nonetheless I persist with my indulgence because I know that stories such as “Akira” can and will inspire change and even revolution in how we see our world.

I will continue with the second volume ~

I've wanted to know the classical story of 'Akira' for so long & am finally onto it! This series is iconic & I am already beginning to understand why. I can see how many TV shows and other forms of media have been inspired by this story and am excited to see what happens next! Very cool dystopian action-filled story so far. I like how it follows a group of young bikie gang members as well, its not a common perspective for me to follow.

Characters 8/10
Plot 8/10
Style / Writing 7/10
Enjoyment 8/10

Overall 4/5
