The build up to the mystery in this book feels a bit slow and overly-meandering but ultimately a fun Florida mystery investigated by a guy’s guy detective with some unexpected twists and turns.
The few references/threats of sexual assault, especially towards Rosa after she was kidnapped, made some of the scenes less enjoyable to read, even when funny things would happen soon after. However I understand that none of the characters are supposed to be super likable and it definitely didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the book overall.
Very few completely likable characters, but if that isn’t something you need then you’ll have a good time leaning in to Yancy’s smarmy attitude.

Graphic: Death, Racial slurs, Murder, and Sexual content
Moderate: Sexual harassment
Minor: Racism, Suicide attempt, and Child death

Lot of fun with a lot of plates spinning but it mostly works with most of the various Florida Men and Florida Women getting such rich descriptions even if it's a bit part. This is a pretty horny one - not a value judgment.

I was a lucky winner of Carl Hiaasen's latest novel, and I couldn't be more pleased. I've read most everything he's published, and I've never been disappointed. I enjoyed Bad Monkey with all of the twists and turns. I can't wait for his next book!

Let me be clear that I hate Mysteries and I hate Murder Mysteries even more, as well as anything having to do with crime and cops. If I wanted to enjoy that genre, I'd watch it on TV. Reading about it is so annoying.
That being said, this book was surprisingly good. A little dull at parts but once I got past the three or four boring pages every so often it still remained quite enjoyable.
I loved the tongue-in-cheek as well as a protagonist who--while irresponsible and lazy by nature--still had a good connection with his father and a determination to solve the case in this book.
What was this crime calssified as? Blue collar? Ugh, these people are so annoying.
Anyone else picture Matthew McConaughey for Yancy, esp. as Wooderson from Dazed & Confused?
