I hope at sometime that Maisie’s assistant Billy gets a break; it seems with every new book that something else in his life goes wrong.
This book follows the aftermath of war theme still, this time in regards to shell shock. Both the disregard and lack of sympathy that was prevalent and the work that was being done to prove its validity and the damage it caused.
I thought the author did a fantastic job of portraying both frames of mind and the often disastrous aftermath of World War One.

One of the best (if not the best) in the series so far. Maisie is up against a man killing with gas strikingly similar to that used as a weapon during the war. Her character starts to come into herself a bit more and further put the melancholy behind her, and it was good to see her get out a bit more and not be so isolated. Loved her interactions with Macfarlane, a detective superintendent she is working with also.

First time reading a Maise Dobbs mystery. This one is all about WWI vets and shell shock. So not exactly a light read but enjoyable enough.

The Maisie Dobbs mysteries, all set around London during and after WWI, each tackle matters of social concern. This story speaks to the numbers of veterans suffering from what we now call PTSD, the horror of early chemical warfare and the prevalence of various asylums.
