Three of the characters being named "America", "Tiny" and "Tuesday" really set the bar for this one. However, had I read this at 12 years old, I would have deemed it one of the most amazing peices of litterature to grace the Earth probably. As a 26-year old reading this three or so days after the USA election of 2024, it hits very weird in all the wrong ways as we learn about the "
fourth world war
" and how "
China pulled strings in the downfall of what was the USA
" and "
my mother named me America because of how much I was kicking and 'fighting' in her belly before I was born
" and how "
the rebels both in the North and South keep making attacks on the palace and sometimes they break in and kill people
".

Might continue reading/listening for the sake of my inner 12 year old, and to have something to pass the time. I believe I have read at least 3 One Direction-Wattpad fanfics that might have been, in some way, inspired by this book/series. It's fun read for a trope bingo!

Do not make a drinking game based on the times any character uses the word "pretty" or "beautiful", though. Do. Not. You will be in need of medical assistance before the 40% mark.

This was awful and I can’t believe I finished it. America Singer (what an awful name) is a great value Katniss without being a badass. She’s extremely “not like other girls.” The book is just crammed full of every basic romance trope the author could think of, and not one is used well. Also, the writing is flat-out bad. There was nothing redeemable about this book.

If you are thinking about listening to it instead of reading, don’t. The narrator is also bad.

I really enjoyed the book. It was nice and refreshing to read. I would give it a higher rating but I don't feel like it was the BEST. I hope the next book has more romance

I went into this book being a little cautious. Let’s be honest… the plot description screamed The Bachelor to me, and I am one who is not at all interested in The Bachelor.

But, this plot was good. There was world-building. There was politics. There was the dystopian aspect. It wasn’t entirely about romance, and I loved that.

Who knows, I may change my mind between now and when I finish this series. But at this moment, I think America Singer is the newest addition to my list of favorite book characters. I could feel so many of the emotions she was experiencing, and therefore I felt like I really connected with her. She is such a strong FMC. She thinks through decisions. She is selfless and has a grand heart for others. She’s confident in herself. She’s strong and powerful in her own way. The entire plot of her being in a situation she didn’t want to be in, surrounded by girls who did want to be there, was a very interesting plot and something I enjoyed reading.

I ultimately rated this a 4.75 simply because of something that happens toward the end of the book that I didn’t particularly like, because I think it threw a wrench in what was seemingly becoming a smoother subplot. However, America’s response to this was comforting, as it showed her admirable quality of being able to keep a level head. Overall, great book and I can’t wait to read the next!

📖
I remembered when this book released and hold this series had on me. This was among my favorite series.

Having re-read this book, I will say that I hold some fondness for this series and the characters.

This book was alright. I think fondness has me rating it three stars. The characters weren't bad, but they were a little flat. The relationships were basic and the love triangle had me rolling my eyes. The writing style was a struggle stay engaged with. The plot was basic and predictable, and fondness helped me read the book in an afternoon.
