This book was definitely a page-turner for me but it has it’s quirks. The blend of fiction and real(?) accounts is interesting, but since the journals are from the 1960s some of the language and ideas are hard to read and get behind (i.e., some homophobic remarks and anti-feminist stuff etc.). I did enjoy having the journal chapters between chapters about Collins Braithwaite, it was a nice break from the journals. The themes of self, identity, and deception made me stop and think at times.  Overall interesting and engaging read but sometimes rough. Probably wouldn’t read again.

✨ Thrifted ✨

I was immediately intrigued when I saw this book on the shelf at the secondhand bookshop! Having Braithwaite’s biography play a part in ‘Rebecca’s’ narrative was well done too, I liked reading Books 1 - 6 and then getting her perspective too.

However, it still wasn’t all that gripping. I did want to put it down in some parts, so I’m giving it 3 out of 5 stars, thank you ✨

I really wanted to like this book more, as it had a captivating beginning to the story and I loved how the author played with the story. Unfortunately, I did not understand what was the meaning behind this book and what kind of message the author wanted to convey writing up this story. Collin Braithwaite’s life was presented in a consequent way, and you can follow the development of the character, but the story in parallel felt very incoherent in places. I also disliked the detailed descriptions of suicide and methods - I am still unsure why authors provide their readers with that level of details these days, what do they hope to achieve? Not fond of the ending either. I would suggest the readers to really consider the trigger warnings before picking up this book.

This was described as funny. I'm not sure where the humour came in, but I didn't "get it" in his last book either and still enjoyed it so [shrug emoji]

God, that was a tough read! It was interesting and dull at the same time on occasion.
Should definitely have trigger warnings on suicide.
