I won’t blame the writer or the story, but this book just wasn’t for me. A quarter of the way in and I have to argue with and convince myself to pick it up. Maybe I will try another day again, but for me, the story and the telling of it was bland and lifeless.
Maybe I stopped too soon, but I am not generally inclined to put books away without finishing them. I also don’t know much about this particular story, and not having that background might be the reason for the blandness.

What even was this book. I liked the historical context but for the most part I just wasn't engaged... four of Mr. Wroe's "virgins" narrate the story and even though the narrative styles were unique, I didn't feel really connected with the story until Martha came in, a character who was badly abused but flourishes under the other sisters helping her to regain speech and teaching her how to read. Her narrations were poetic, broken, and imperfect; I loved those parts.

I suppose I enjoyed this one ok. I think I expected more, though. I would like to see the BBC adaptation.
