This is a powerful book with luscious illustrations. Misty explains that she did not see many ballerinas that looked like her when she was growing up. She wrote this book in part to provide inspiration for girls like her so they could envision themselves dancing ballet. I loved the text and the illustrations.

The space between you and me is longer than forever and I will show them that forever is not so far away.

4.5 stars: straightforward but beautiful, in both message and lyricism. as a former child/adolescent ballet dancer, I think any young dancer would benefit from reading this book.

Firebird is about a young aspiring black ballerina, but she lacks confidence in her abilities. The illustrations are intriguing and I love the message of breaking racial stereotypes and following your dreams, but even though I wanted to love the story, I felt like it was lacking.

Gorgeous illustrations. Lovely verses, but they went over the girls' head.

Misty Copeland is fantastic, Firebird is fantastic, the art in this is lovely, but the whole thing together kinda fell down for me. It's hard to draw about ballet, I guess?
