This is my first Slaughter book and I’m an immediate fan. I would recommend looking at trigger warnings before starting this book though since it deals with sexual assault and child abuse as main themes.

Maaaan normally I enjoy Karin Slaughter books but this one was a miss for me. The first chapter was SO GOOD - the realization that
Callie is the babysitter and not Buddy’s wife
hit me like a train. Unfortunately, I feel like it went downhill from there. This book was DARK and literally everything that was revealed throughout the book was depressing as hell. The only character I liked was the vet, and he makes three appearances. The Covid references irked me, not because I disagree with Karin Slaughter and her (obvious) lean, but because of how constant they were.

This was a book with so many triggers, but so good overall! It was honestly hard to stomach when reading about the abuse of Callie that went on for years and how much she suffered daily. Leigh was a wonderful sister that carried the guilt of being a mom figure to her sister and watching her live through tremendous pain and addiction. The ending was traumatic, but also well rounded at the same time.

i did not like this book very much 🫣 a booktok type dude i follow for horror recs posted it so I checked it out, sometimes he recommends bangers other times not so much!

ok first of all this story is so crazy u really have to suspend reality like the story gets boring and then something crazy drops and ur like… how is this real….

i didn’t feel like any of the characters were real people they were all so cartoonish !!!
omg when sidney was revealed to be in on it i was like ok scream 🙄

the biggest thing that pissed me off is WHY leigh cared so much about the fucking tapes bro like ok so if they come out it just showed that buddy is a pedophile???? and that u killed him in self defense?
so much of this could have been avoided bro i guess yeah in high stress situations your judgement is clouded but every single decision these characters made was so stupid 😭

also SO gory i’m not a huge body horror person and callie was talking about her abscess so much i was getting nauseous.

and the covid aspect… i’m not in a place in my life where i want to read about covid. i know what it was like, girl! i was there!

the messages regarding CSA and addiction bring the score up, and the writing overall was good plot was just ASS. in my opinion 🤭

This is a hard one to review. Overall, I thought it was a solid thriller. What I liked: really suspenseful and dark. The author does a great job of describing the characters and situations. I could feel my skin crawl every time the villain said or did anything. What I didn’t like: it’s a bit long for what it was. Check the content warnings - I had a really hard time with the graphic, repetitive descriptions of child SA.
