This was a book with so many triggers, but so good overall! It was honestly hard to stomach when reading about the abuse of Callie that went on for years and how much she suffered daily. Leigh was a wonderful sister that carried the guilt of being a mom figure to her sister and watching her live through tremendous pain and addiction. The ending was traumatic, but also well rounded at the same time.

This book legitimately made me sob. But in the way only Karen’s books can. I think the focus on sisterhood really emotionally drew me in. Her books are visceral and dark but SO GOOD.

Great hard-hitting thriller.  I stayed up too late to finish this one.

Dnf at 45%. So many covid references. I read to relax, reading about covid is honestly the last thing i need.
Also felt like the story was just going so so slow and just dragging on.

I'm incredibly conflicted. I really admire Slaughter's ability to create high intensity thrillers that examine topics like childhood trauma and sexual assault, all within the lens of a strong sister relationship. It's done very well here, but I cannot come to a conclusion about whether I enjoyed it. It's possible I've become too soft fo stories like this,.but the climatic scene was extremely upsetting and at times I struggled to understand with the characters' intentions. However, it was gripping and Slaughter manages to create two really compelling main characters.

This was my first Karin Slaughter novel. It started out a bit meh — felt a bit forced and several of the descriptions and adjectives seemed repetitive. After getting through the first part the plot began to come together and didn’t seem as forced. The timeliness of the book — set during Covid — was also interesting.

Fast paced, good character and plot development. Challenging themes.
