Human stories from another time. A time more primal, more brutal. Storytelling has that fine weave threading of tragedy, melancholy and irony.

In my opinion, it was better than Beloved (not that that is saying much), but still a pretty terrible book. I had a terrible time getting into it at all, which I did expect considering I despised Beloved. All in all, I regret reading the book, but take my opinion with a grain of salt. I am not Toni Morrison's biggest fan. At least it was short!

That Toni Morrison and her nonlinear storytelling. This one was a hard read and I had to reference the Internet to keep some events and characters straight. Probably not my favorite Morrison work, but she is master and I appreciate her work so.

Really great. Has so many of the themes and elements that make Morrison's earlier works so strong, but in a much shorter package. I liked this a lot, and found the shifting POVs interesting and engaging. There isn't much of a plot in this one, but the meandering character work and stream-of-consciousness style is a hallmark of Morrison's work, and I'm never disappointed when I get that from her. Morrison was such a gifted writer. What a joy to be able to read her work.
