A brilliant collection of horror stories - I think a couple missed the mark, neither horror or arctic, perhaps sci-fi but overall a great read.

Short own voices collection of Inuit horror stories. Great quick read for October. For me, most of them were too short - they were over just as I was getting into them, or didn't seem to ever really get going. I never felt like anything happened - I literally read this whole collection in 2 hours.

"Utiqtuq," "The Wildest Game," and "Strays," were the only stories that really stuck with me/spoke to me.

I did really love the unabashed immersion in Inuit culture, and added several of the authors who contributed to my to-be-read list. So - not only a good read for October, but for Indigenous Heritage Month (November).

A lot of these were ok, but there were a few that were really good. Most of these were in a future setting, and I really liked how well they were able to convey that future so clearly in such little space.

Pretty cool

I loved this collection of stories!! I read the first story late at night...and promptly shut the book and went to bed lol. I then proceeded to read these stories at night.

First off I must say the order that these stories were organized in was fantastic! I don't usually pay attention to that when I read short story collections or anthologies but the progression of these stories and how I felt while reading them I felt had largely to do with the order. I loved every one of these stories, there's not one that I skipped over or thought "meh". Every one I was wanting to tell my husband about who promptly said "stop telling me I wanna read them next!" haha.

Read this collection!!

There is really nothing wrong with this collection, but none of these stories scared me or drew me in. There are a couple interesting ones, but generally they were pretty thin and honestly amateur. I would say these could have used a hard critique to bring them up to a more adult level.

What I liked:
The Door: Although I didn't think this story nailed it, there was a cool, weird fiction element to it that I liked. I wish it was filled out a bit more.

Utiqtuq: This was probably me favorite story, I think it was written well for the most part and dealt with a very familiar story trope in an effective way, made it feel like its own story rather than a rehashing of the same old thing:
Spoiler zombie apocalypse where a person saves some children and brings them to wilderness north where they survive long enough for the government to develop a vaccine and come looking to save them from their wasted existence in the North
. There were some parts of it that were very superficial, that I think COULD have been really great had they been handled with a bit more subtlety, rather than just bashing us over the head with the moral. Overall, best story imo. I would read a novel version of this one.

The Wildest Game: Honestly, kinda surprised by this one. It's the kind of story I normally hate
Spoiler about a killer explaining himself. I abhor that kind of glorification of killing type of story, like cool serial killer vibe, barf
. I actually appreciated some of this author's approach, not what I was expecting. Not bad.

My two star is not meant to say this is bad at all, I rate things two stars when I didn't particularly enjoy reading the book, but didn't actually hate it either. This one just didn't do it for me, unfortunately.
