Interesting world and compelling story - I thought the framing of the story was pretty cool, and the worldbuilding was so thought-provoking and fun to unravel! However, this was a book that was more intellectually compelling for me than emotionally compelling, except for the first part, and I wish that emotional investment had continued throughout the book.

My copy was returned to the library after reading around 80% and I'm fine leaving this as a DNF. The premise and sci-fi bits are intrguing at first but fail to be expanded on throughout the story. We are constantly having things re-explained whenever the book stop-starts with another set of characters (this happens three times). These issues are coupled with annoying dialogue that felt out of place with the rest of the novel. I think this book would have worked better as a short story collection following different characters in a shared universe, ala Sequoia Nagamatsu's How High We Go in the Dark.
