Out of the Blue by Josh Lanyon

I like Josh Lanyon, but I really dislike this book. It gets two stars simply because it's well-written and the milieu is beautifully realized, but the story — the romance — makes me twitch.

Cowboy is an unlikeable character whose actions are morally reprehensible, and Bat is impossible to empathize with because he's so obviously and willingly a victim. Strip the sex scenes from the book and change Bat to a woman and you've got a bodice-ripper from the middle of the last century; while some people may enjoy that, I find the relationship dynamics far too problematic.

I love Josh Lanyon! Unlike so many men, he never disappoints! ;)

This is a m/m novella set in France during World War I. May contain spoilers, so be warned.

Grieving the death of his lover, British pilot Aubrey “Bat” Bryant accidentally kills a blackmailing mechanic. He’s surprised when Cowboy Cooper, an American member of the team, insists on helping dispose of the body. But once the deed is done, it appears that Cowboy is ready, willing and able to not only take the deceased pilot’s place in Bat’s bed, but wanting to take it even farther.

I really did love this story, even though it seemed that there was dubious consent at first. After all, Cowboy is essentially the one man who can get Bat court-martialed and shot if the truth comes out, even if it was an accident. The relationship between Gene and Bat wasn’t exactly condoned by the military back then. However, I do believe that if Bat truly didn't want anything to do with Cowboy, the American would back off.

The worst thing about this story would probably be the length. I wanted to know more. I wanted to know if the young men made it out of the war alive, if they stayed together somehow. I suppose that is all any author can ask, that upon completing a story, the reader wants even more. If that is true, mission accomplished. 4+ out of 5.

adventurous dark medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
Should've probably read the summary before just clicking on this, I was unprepared for the SERIOUS dub con. So like just in case anyone who is bothering to do their research didn't catch on with the summary: VERY dubious.

I am not a fan of this book at all. I gave 2 stars because, like every other Josh Lanyon book I have read, this book is well written. The story, though, is not my cuppa tea. Bat's lover dies a day or two prior to the start of this story, and Bat is really grieving the loss. Cowboy comes along and basically forces himself on Bat, and then blackmails him to keep being with him. It was dysfunctional on so many levels. I am not a fan of dub-con, which this very much was.

SpoilerOkay, this is short, so I listen to it completely but, in all fairness, I hated Cowboy. I hated all about him, and no, I can't imagine a future for them. Not only for the time in which this story is set but because Cowboy blackmailed Bat into a relationship and that... nope, I can't get over it.

The story itself is interesting, and therefore the 3 stars, but it's not my cup of tea, sorry
