Oh yeah, all of my first attempts at novels are as insightful, inspiring, and wildly philosophical as T. R.'s, too. Sexy, smart, understated, women empowering. Everything you want in a guy.

Probably my least favourite Robbins book, but that still means it's great.

My first Tom Robbins, and franctly the best in my opinion. Definitely quirky, hippy, and fantastic on so many fronts. Like no other book I had read...I adored it from beginning to end!

I pretty much love all Tom Robbins books, and this one was no exception. You can tell he hasn't fully developed his writing style in this one, as it's a little messier than his later books. But still, it's a very entertaining read!

The image of Amanda and her butterflies has stayed with me. I thought of it recently when reading The Satanic Verses when an erstwhile prophetess is clothed only in them. And Jesus, found in the Vatican in a secret room we all know exists -- this is just too good. My favorite of the Robbins books I tried.

A denser and more serious in tone read than a lot of his others. His strongest female protagonist too, I feel. One always has to approach books of this era (1971) with a more open mind to the mores of the time rather than applying a 21st century feminist filter.
A book that really makes you think about the purpose of religion, with a good bit of absurdity as usual for Robbins.
A satisfying ending except
Spoilerwhy did Mon Cul have to go with Ziller and The Corpse?
