While I enjoyed at first returning to the characters of Robin and Strike, this book quickly became too long, rambling and detailed, losing the fast pace that propelled some of the previous books forward. Robin and Strike’s relationship is now too static to keep my interest, and when that is missing, you are left with an incredibly complicated second-rate crime novel that mainly occurs as a series of interviews. There is so much much to remember because the book is so long that even though I remembered the culprit when they were revealed, I was almost surprised that I did! Rowling needs to cut the unnecessary detail and take the tension of Robin and Strike’s relationship somewhere if these books are to remain interesting. Unfortunately I’m not sure if I’ll stay around for the next instalment.
